I Love, I Hate
I Love, I Hate is a poster exhibition held at Boston University in 2024, where exhibitors designed posters based on either love or hate. I chose I Hate because there are too many things I love.
My subject? Something I consume regularly but despise: caffeine. It pushes past sleepiness, fuels workouts, and sharpens focus. With endless brands, flavors, and forms, it’s everywhere—but I hate them all.
They’re all bitter. No amount of cream, sugar, or chemicals can mask the aftertaste. Even their colors feel toxic—jet-black coffee, neon-drenched energy drinks. And I hate when I drink them most: lonely nights, drowning in work, staring at my screen, exhausted yet wired.
Caffeine is useful, but I resent what it represents—forcing my body beyond its natural limits.
For my poster, I layered the caffeine chemical formula in the background, added a Red Bull, and a strained, tired eye. The main text reads:
"I hate caffeine forcefully energizing humans to be useful."
The subtext expands on my frustrations. Printed on newsprint, the black-and-white design enhances the raw contrast of my feelings.
